    Ballistic Localization in Quasi-1D Waveguides with Rough Surfaces

    Structure of eigenstates in a periodic quasi-1D waveguide with a rough surface is studied both analytically and numerically. We have found a large number of "regular" eigenstates for any high energy. They result in a very slow convergence to the classical limit in which the eigenstates are expected to be completely ergodic. As a consequence, localization properties of eigenstates originated from unperturbed transverse channels with low indexes, are strongly localized (delocalized) in the momentum (coordinate) representation. These eigenstates were found to have a quite unexpeted form that manifests a kind of "repulsion" from the rough surface. Our results indicate that standard statistical approaches for ballistic localization in such waveguides seem to be unappropriate.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Spherical orbit closures in simple projective spaces and their normalizations

    Let G be a simply connected semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0 and let V be a rational simple G-module of finite dimension. If G/H \subset P(V) is a spherical orbit and if X is its closure, then we describe the orbits of X and those of its normalization. If moreover the wonderful completion of G/H is strict, then we give necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions so that the normalization morphism is a homeomorphism.     High-Energy Proton-Proton Forward Scattering and Derivative Analyticity Relations

    We present the results of several parametrizations to two different ensemble of data on pppp total cross sections σtotpp\sigma_{tot}^{pp} at the highest center-of-mass energies (including cosmic-ray information). The results are statistically consistent with two distinct scenarios at high energies. From one ensemble the prediction for the LHC (s=14\sqrt s = 14 TeV) is σtotpp=113±5\sigma_{tot}^{pp} = 113 \pm 5 mb and from the other, σtotpp=140±7\sigma_{tot}^{pp}=140 \pm 7 mb. From each parametrization, and making use of derivative analyticity relations (DAR), we determine ρ(s)\rho(s) (ratio between the forward real and imaginary parts of the elastic scattering amplitude).     Esta comunicación trata de una investigación realizada en dos institutos de Galicia sobre la argumentación de los estudiantes de enseñanza secundaria en relación a una exposición interactiva del proyecto Climántica, prestando especial atención a la desarrollada por estudiantes de Ciencias para el Mundo Contemporáneo (CCMC). Para el análisis cuantitativo se tomó como patrón las respuestas de estudiantes de segundo de Bachillerato de ciencias de toda Galicia. Se contextualizó por completo en el ámbito Climántica, un proyecto de Educación Ambiental en red con el objetivo básico de intercambiar ideas y experiencias, generar productos didácticos interdisciplinares, enriquecer el currículo de Educación Ambiental y abordar las principales problemáticas ambientales relacionándolas con el cambio climático, con el fin de aprovechar el desarrollo didáctico de los docentes para, de este modo y usando su dimensión global, extenderlo la todos los ciudadanos en general, sin límites ni fronteras, a través del uso de su sitio web trilingüe www. climantica. org

    A multi-layered Bayesian network model for structured document retrieval

    New standards in document representation, like for example SGML, XML, and MPEG-7, compel Information Retrieval to design and implement models and tools to index, retrieve and present documents according to the given document structure. The paper presents the design of an Information Retrieval system for multimedia structured documents, like for example journal articles, e-books, and MPEG-7 videos. The system is based on Bayesian Networks, since this class of mathematical models enable to represent and quantify the relations between the structural components of the document. Some preliminary results on the system implementation are also presented
